Associates
Associates in our firm can expect meaningful support and training, early client contact, and responsibility for important client matters. Like many firms, our associates are guided and developed by their supervising partner. But unlike many firms, our associates are assigned a mentor who is unconnected to their practice group. This mentor provides advice and counsel on the things they don’t teach in law school. Associates receive consistent and regular feedback from our Associate Evaluation Committee, including their progression on partnership-track. Our expectations for achieving partnership are clearly defined and transparent. Finally, associates receive highly-rated training from our Attorney Development Committee, nationally recognized training resources, and they attend cutting edge Continuing Legal Education programs. From substantive aspects of practicing law to business development skills and from technology tools to working with others, our training efforts are consistent and meaningful.
Kean Miller offers competitive salaries, a performance bonus program, new client origination bonuses, federal clerkship bonuses, paid benefits (health, dental, vision, HSA, 401K/profit sharing), paid vacation, service opportunities, and reasonable expectations for proper work/life balance.
Every associate is equipped with a laptop and docking station, dual monitors, advanced financial software (Aderant), a robust document management system, and the latest technology such as Office 365 and Windows 10. When working from home or away from the office, attorneys enjoy a secure VPN connection.
At Kean Miller, we don’t just talk about diversity, we live it every day. From our inception, we have recognized the value of diverse ethnic, cultural and racial backgrounds. We are committed to promoting a culture of inclusion, not only within the firm, but in the communities where we live and work. The best evidence of this commitment is found in our statistics. Kean Miller has one of the highest percentages of women attorneys and women partners of any major law firm, and we rank among firms having the highest percentages of minority attorneys. The firm has achieved Mansfield Certification for the fifth year in a row and is currently pursuing certification for 2024-25.
Our primary recruiting effort consists of on-campus interviews in the fall and spring and in-office interviews with students from other law schools around the country. Our Recruiting Committee, co-chaired by Beau Bourgeois and Amanda Howard Lowe, is composed of partners and associates from various practice groups.
Our law clerk program is designed to expose clerks to all aspects of the firm's practice in a meaningful and deliberate way. Our summer law clerks have opportunities to attend hearings, depositions, trials, and client meetings. Each clerk is paired with an associate attorney who acts as a mentor to the clerk for the course of the clerkship. The attorney provides guidance, support and advice, coordinates opportunities to interact with other attorneys, and helps the clerk become acquainted with important aspects of life in our firm.
Kean Miller is dedicated to hiring associates with the strongest academic records and highest levels of personal achievement. We hire associates for either partnership track or staff attorney positions. We highly value Law Review candidates and provide flexible arrangements for graduates completing federal and state judicial clerkships.
